Great place and wonderful practitioners. Some of the best bodywork I’ve ever had. (And I get a lot of body work due to chronic pain issues!) I’ve worked with Julia, Jaime and Carolyn for massage depending on my schedule and they are fantastic. Lovely, attentive and willing to adjust to my changing needs. For ongoing physical therapy, I rely on Liz Williams. She is a body whisperer.
I have been going to Stan for massage for years and he is absolutely the best! Whether I’m dealing with an injury or just need to get a way for a relaxing massage, Synapse is the place to go! Aside from being an exceptionally knowledgeable and talented massage therapist, Stan has a wonderful way of being and is really just a great person. I’m excited that Stan is growing Synapse and I’m certain that any massage therapist that he adds to the business is quality.
Had an amazing deep tissue massage given by Stan. Excellent pressure and effective techniques to get at the shoulder and neck tightness. He was also very gracious in changing my time as my car had been broken into and items stolen. Was great to walk into their space and feel the quiet and calm. Will definitely be back.
Synapse Bodywork is where I go for my regular tuneups. As a bodyworker myself, I’m extremely particular and have bounced all around Oakland in search for great massage therapy. I always come back to Synapse. Stan uses a quicker pace, while Carolyn is a bit slower. Both therapists are super thorough, professional and provide a great session.
This place definitely deserves 5+ stars! I have had massages from 3 different massage therapists (Stan, Jaime and Liz) here and I gotta say I was impressed with every one of them.First, before I even got there, booking online was simple and quick! Second, the parking in the back makes it super easy (no stress!). Third, the new location is really beautiful. The eye for detail is such a nice added touch. Fourth, 90 minute massage and I didn’t want it to end!! I’m usually pretty antsy and ready to go after an hour, but I found I was so relaxed I didn’t even notice the time go by. Oh! And the hot towels, soo good! And last, but certainly not least, each massage therapist really did give me a great massage. I have had many massages in the past, but these were above and beyond.Thank you so much Synapse, I will be back!
“Liz is an amazingly skilled bodyworker. I have had many providers over the years to help deal with a challenging chronic medical condition that includes muscle pain and stiffness. Liz is in my “elite group”. Liz has that gift of feeling into the tissues so that they give—but not pressing too hard. She is good about listening to feedback, and a kind and friendly person. I feel totally comfortable having her as a provider.”
“I came to Synapse Bodywork because a friend of mine, who is a long-time Pilates instructor, said: “Until I went to Synapse I did not know what massage could be.” I had never sought out massage, but I had been having some really painful neck, shoulder, and back pain for months and needed short-term relief and help devising a long-term solution. Liz provided everything I needed to feel better and then some! Because she is not only a massage therapist but also a physical therapist, Liz approaches bodywork with deep knowledge and intelligence. After just a few sessions with her, I felt immeasurably better, and just as importantly, I understood for the first time how my spine, neck, and shoulders actually work, and how I can better support my body and remain pain-free. Liz is also an uncommonly compassionate person. She helped me understand I had to approach the pain in my body not with impatience and frustration, but with kindness. I cannot recommend Liz and Synapse highly enough.”
I highly recommend Stan. I had my doubts about a 90 minute massage– that it would be too long. I was wrong. It’s perfect. Now, I don’t think I can ever do anything but a 90 minute massage. I went to Stan to reduce stress, and it worked! I felt totally recharged and relaxed afterwards. I am definitely going to be a regular.
After a very rough year, endless health issues, and continually escalating stress levels, I came to Carolyn for some relaxation. It doesn’t come naturally to me, but has been increasingly important. Carolyn acknowledges, respects, and devotes herself to that importance. Every session starts with the question, “what do you need today?” She then caters each massage to my particular stresses and desires. She has an amazing energy. It’s relaxing, compassionate, down-to-earth. I never feel she’s forcing her kindness. It’s clear she cares about her job. She’s never fake. I enjoy our conversations at the end of the sessions. As a masseuse, she’s incredible. She knows how to work out every tension I might have, and she knows how to provide a serene experience. She even finds a perfect balance of the both. She has a particularly amazing technique with the hands, where she stretches your fingers back, while rubbing all the pressure points. It may be such a simple technique, but those two minutes…
The first time I came in to see Stan, I had tweaked my back earlier in the day and knew I wouldn’t get through the night without some sort of relief. It was already about 5pm when I started my search on yelp. I called a few places but couldn’t get an appointment so last minute. When I called Synapse, Stan was kind enough to take me as his last client of the night. And I am SO glad that this is the place I landed on! Stan knew exactly what to do to relieve my pain and checked in with his pressure early on. He has a very honoring touch unlike most massage therapists I’ve been to, and I even had to let him know that at the end of the session. I knew I would be back and similarly to what others have said, I plan to make these visits a routine part of my self-care. My second experience tonight was just as great. It’s easy to book online (I booked Thu evening for an appointment the very next Friday night) and parking in the back lot is super convenient. I highly suggest Synapse for anyon…
